Irish Ferries crosses in around 90 minutes, matching P&O and about ten minutes under DFDS, and its sailings interleave with the other two into the route's combined timetable of more than 30 crossings a day in each direction. The ships: Oscar Wilde and Isle of Inishmore

The pitch is space. The Oscar Wilde carries around a thousand cars and offers a Food Market, Cafe Lafayette, a seasonal pub and the Adventure Island soft play for children; the Isle of Inishmore answers with Boylans Brasserie and the Sky Bar. Both ships carry Club Class - a lounge with its own catering, included in the Flexi+ fare or bookable as an upgrade - and the Pet Den, a lounge where dogs travel outside the car. Check-in: 60 minutes, 90 with a pet

Irish Ferries publishes the clearest deadlines on the route: check-in closes 60 minutes before departure for cars, 90 minutes when travelling with a pet or booked assistance, and two hours for coaches. After the kiosk come the juxtaposed border controls - French in Dover, British in Calais - and on busy days Irish Ferries itself asks for extra time at Calais, up to two hours, for the border checks. Foot passengers, pets, vehicles

Irish Ferries publishes no foot-passenger service on Dover - Calais; its booking search shows a foot or cycling option only on selected sailings, so the reliable walk-on operator remains P&O (foot passengers). Pets must be pre-booked and registered before check-in and travel in the vehicle or in the Pet Den; the animal health certificate, microchip and the tapeworm treatment for the return to Britain are on the pets page. Motorhomes and caravans sail on every departure: Irish Ferries bands cars at up to 1.9 m and 2.25 m high, motorhomes up to 2.25 m high and under 8 m long or over, and treats anything over 12 m as freight; gas bottles up to 47 kg in total (maximum three cylinders) are allowed if shut off, secured and declared, and LPG-, LNG- and CNG-powered vehicles are accepted with the cylinders closed on board. The ladder has three steps. Economy is tied to the booked sailing, with amendments against a fee and no refund. Flexi makes amendments free and the ticket refundable. Flexi+ adds Club Class. When Irish Ferries is the right pick

For a day trip or a short hop, the day returns decide. For a dog that should not spend ninety minutes in the car, the Pet Den is the alternative to P&O's Pet Lounge. For a quiet crossing with catering included, Club Class on the Flexi+ fare is the most complete lounge product on the route.
