The Dover specialist

On the Channel P&O sails one route only, and it sails it intensively: its own timetable quotes between eleven and fifteen crossings a day in each direction, interleaved with DFDS and Irish Ferries into the route's combined total of more than 30 sailings. The crossing takes around 90 minutes, the same as Irish Ferries and about ten minutes less than DFDS. Frequency is the product - the next P&O ship is rarely more than an hour or two away, and on a disrupted day the next sailing of any operator shows in the live search.

The ships: P&O Pioneer, P&O Liberte, Spirit of France

The flagships P&O Pioneer and P&O Liberte are double-ended ferries: a bridge at each end, no turning in port, which is part of how the timetable holds on a route where a ship spends as long alongside as at sea. On board they carry the biggest duty-free floors on the route, food markets, a Club Lounge with its own deck and quiet zones for the ninety minutes. The Spirit of France completes the 2026 roster with the classic layout of restaurants, shop and lounges. Vehicle decks close for the crossing, so take what you need upstairs; cards are the payment default in pounds or euros.

Foot passengers: P&O's door across the strait

What sets P&O apart is walking on board. It is the only operator carrying foot passengers between Dover and Calais, on fixed daily sailings - from Dover at 09:45, 13:40 and 16:40, from Calais at 09:50, 15:00 and 19:00 - with tickets sold online only, never at the terminal. Check-in closes 90 minutes before departure (120 in Calais on peak days): in Dover you report to the P&O desk in the passenger terminal building and a port bus takes you to the EES registration area and to the ship; in Calais a P&O agent meets you and a shuttle carries you through both border checks. Check-in, pets, vehicles

P&O's own pages currently publish two car check-in deadlines, 60 and 90 minutes; plan 90 and every sailing is safe, and 90 is firm for foot passengers and for anyone travelling with a pet. After the kiosk come the juxtaposed border controls - French in Dover, British in Calais - before you reach the boarding lane; the peak-day buffers are on the check-in page.

Dogs, cats and ferrets travel in the vehicle or, for dogs, in the Pet Lounge, a dogs-only cabin with deck access that no other operator on the route offers; the animal health certificate, microchip and the tapeworm treatment for the return to Britain are explained on pets. Motorhomes and caravans sail on every departure with gas bottles declared, isolated and secured up to 47 kg; LPG-powered vehicles are accepted as long as the system is the manufacturer's. Fares: Standard, Standard Flexi, Fully Flexi

P&O sells a three-step ladder. Standard ties you loosely to the booked sailing - you may travel up to four hours either side of it - with amendments against a fee and no refund. Standard Flexi keeps the four-hour window but makes amendments free and the ticket refundable. Fully Flexi lets you take any departure and refunds in full. When P&O is the right pick

Without a vehicle it is P&O by definition. With a dog that should not spend ninety minutes in the car, the Pet Lounge decides. For anyone who values the newest tonnage on the route and the biggest shops on board, the Pioneer and Liberte are the argument. If your priority is the widest rebooking window, look at DFDS's 72-hour Premium; if it is the sharpest day return, at Irish Ferries.
